One thing about travelling via train in Europe is the confusing types of tickets for different countries. We wanted to travel out of Strasbourg to Freiburg and Lake Titisee for a day trip, and booking the right train connections at the cheapest price took some research.
The best combination I found was as follows:
Strasbourg - Kehl - Offenburg - FreiburgI got the Baden-Württemberg-Ticket which allows a day of regional travelling for up to 5 persons per ticket. However it doesn't cover my entire trip from Strasbourg, so I purchased another ticket for the Strasbourg to Kehl leg.
Lake Titisee
How to get there: Hells Valley Train (Höllentalbahn) from Freiburg train station
The area around the lake is beautiful and peaceful, but nothing very special. In warmer months you can rent a boat or bike for some sightseeing around the lake. There were a few restaurants and tourist shops, but nothing fanciful.
(Schlossbergturm or Castle Hill Tower)
How to get there: From the train station (Hauptbahnhof), walk through the old town and take the Schlossbergbahn funicular railway up to Schlossberg Hill and hike up to the tower.
From the train station (Hauptbahnhof), walk towards the bridge marked with the star.

Taking the railway is like taking an elevator. You got to start the ride yourself.

After reaching the railway, you just find the signs to reach the tower!
Schlossbergturm or Castle Hill Tower
The wind is quite strong at the top so the tower sways a little, especially at the tiny staircase right at the top! Not for the faint hearted!

Cafe Schmidt
Since you are in the Black Forest region, you got to try the black forest cake which originated from there right? Well, it was a little underwhelming for me though. It was pretty delicious but not something that I'll go for a second helping. The cafe was very crowded in the afternoon with lots of tourists and locals.

From wikipedia "The last duke of Zähringen had started the building around 1200 in romanesque style, the construction continued in 1230 in Gothic style. The minster was partly built on the foundations of an original church that had been there from the beginning of Freiburg in 1120."

One of the things my hubby and I enjoy doing when we travel is to browse the local markets for unique local produce. We stopped by the square for some quick bites for the afternoon.
After having too much meat sausages, we decided to have tofu sausages! Yummy!

Love the ambience and architecture in Freiburg. Definitely worth a day trip if you ask me.
