Strahan & Gordon River Cruise
Strahan is a small town off the west coast of Tasmania. The lush green forests during winter reminded me of the tropical rainforests back in home territory in South East Asia. The relaxing cruise down the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area on Lady Jane Franklin II was unforgettable.
From Lake St Clair to Strahan
On map, the road from Lake St Clair to Strahan seems pretty short (about 130km from Derwent Bridge). However, you need to pass through Queenstown - a mining town with mountaineous and winding roads. We set off late in the afternoon (the sun sets at about 4.30pm-5pm during winter) and got ourselves caught in the pitch-dark nature reserve after slowing down on the winding mining roads. Remember to reach your destination by 5pm during winter!

Winter holidays have its privileges! Since it was off peak season in Tasmania, our room was upgraded! Do note that this is an ultra late post on my travel in 2011, so I can't guarantee that it's still what I saw back then. There's a laundry room within the compound with coin-operated washer and dryer if you need to wash your clothes. We had a very comfortable stay at the villa.

We boarded Lady Jane Franklin II early in the morning to start on the Gordon River Morning Cruise. The seats were comfortable regardless of window or atrium seating. We also had delicious buffet lunch served on the main deck.

Along the cruise route
"Weak tea" coloured Gordon River waters - due to the absorption of tannin from button grass growing in the area. The water is in fact drinkable!

Cold cut spread for buffet lunch
Lunch was yummy! The cold cuts ran out quite quickly though!
Heritage Landing boardwalk
If you are not keen for a walk for the Heritage Landing boardwalk or Sarah Island tour, you can always stay onboard the cruise to relax! I'll strongly recommend taking the walks though, even in the rain!
